Webinar: How to plan for CoEXistence: Cooperative Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) & Walking and Cycling - opportunity or risk?

Abstract:

Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) refers to the exploitation of automated driving functionalities and connectivity capabilities towards the establishment of a cooperative and integrated transport system. In this way, CCAM is expected to transform the way we travel and has the potential to increase traffic safety and performance, reduce environmental impacts, and enhance the inclusiveness and resilience of mobility services. Through the synchronisation of traffic and public transport, and smoothing of the traffic flow, CCAM could significantly increase road infrastructure and service capacity, or reduce need for on-street parking, freeing up public space. However, an uncontrolled deployment of CCAM could worsen problems like congestion, pollution and GHG emissions, or urban sprawl.

What would the implementation of CCAM services mean for other road users (such as pedestrians and bicycle users)? What changes could it bring to urban design and infrastructure? Could it increase safety conditions for vulnerable road users (VRU) or create higher risks?

This webinar will discuss the main challenges and opportunities for CCAM planning and deployment, considering potential future scenarios and analysing the key requirements and success factors for a sustainable and inclusive implementation.

It will build on the concept of ‘automation-readiness’ (i.e. to have the capability of making structured and informed decisions to shape CCAM deployment to societal needs) as pre-requisite for fulfilment of the promises and benefits of CCAM. Through the presentation and testing of the CCAM-readiness Self-Assessment tool, the webinar will support participating authorities and stakeholders to start planning, as early as possible, how the introduction of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) should unfold, to minimise the potential negative impacts and more importantly make the most of the opportunity to influence the paradigm shift to a more sustainable urban mobility vision
